Clif moves to Linux, full time.

I have been using Linux off and on for years. It had never seemed the right time to adopt it as my primary desktop machine until two things happened. Ubuntu 10 and my discovery of a German program for Linux called TurboPrint.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS was released April 2010. Soon after that I tried it from live CD and using it’s install inside Windows option. Both tests were a success. I found most everything that I use regularly was ether in the distribution or readily available. That is everything but the ability to print.

Sure there is Linux printing. It is generally in the form of the CUPS printer configuration tool and Gutenprint plus some drivers for specific printers. I use Canon Printers and do mostly photo printing or related high quality printing. For whatever the reason, the printers I have never are on the standard list for CUPs drivers and the photo print results were never acceptable. Then I heard about TurboPrint. ( http://www.turboprint.info/ )

TurboPrint is a high quality printer utility for Linux. It is not open source or free but it is not expensive. It has up-to-date drivers for most printers including mine. But more importantly with a little setup and testing you can get great quality photo printing! It also turns out it does a great job of handling printing on non-standard size paper.

So I made the plunge. I wiped Windows from my boot drive and installed Ubuntu.
